latest interview abaout my trip

this interview was made by heike pirngruber. she is also a “woman* on wheels”. who i admire quite a lot. she has been on the road for many years and is still rolling!! now she is also writing interviews about other cyclowomen*. here is what she wrote about me . eventhough she let out most of my political answers -which is a pity- i think its still quiet amusing and detailed – and the only interview thats also available in english. thank you heike – and keep rolling!

solo female biking and sailing around the world

Barbara Graf (Bärbel) – Vienna to Vienna
Austrian – born 1987

3 years and 8 months on the road – maybe about 22.000 km by bicycle and another 19.000 by sailing boat – 29 countries.

Riding my bicycle it was not important “where to” but “how to” – I never much cared about the destination – but about how to be living this life on the road, travel sustainably, use my own power, be autonomous. It’s about cooking “one-pot-meals” on my campfire, stuffing myself with wild mulberries, being invited for tea, making friendship with people I meet, finding funny shelters, recycling and reusing things, fixing my bike on my own and feeling comfortable in the darkness of the forest.

next adventure: land-based collective life

i am back  in vienna for half a year now. still it feels not long time since i was pedalling the world, imagining how it would be to come “home” after all. i found a job as bike messenger. and a warm place for the winter. i only work 12 hours a week though. enough to earn my living. not enough to take my energy away from what i really want to do: find a place and start building a collective base to live with the land, work and experiment together -  exploring the possibillities of an adventurous, ecological and social lifestyle.
so we are looking to buy an old farm with at least 10.000m² land, which we can revive !
Last months we have started to look at properties.  We hope to soon find one which fits our needs perfectly,  so we can start growing vegetables there already next season.

so this is “us” ..some old and some new friends with a common dream.

and here what we are looking to find and do (in german)

Liebe Menschen!

the other one – my favourite ! – an interview with the SOL Magazine. in german only.

giving thanks

i think it’s time to thank.

in fact i believe any time is good to thank.

and now its even more time to thank. for everything what happen. small and big effords. tiny and huge coincidences – which brought me to all those far and high places and thrilling adventures – once around the world – and finaly  to where i am now: back into the arms of friends and family.

thanks to the earth for carrying me, every day. for supporting me with everything i need for life. water. fresh air. sunlight. shelter. food. clothes. friends.
i am glad to be alife. for every day without injuries. and to be healthy after all.

surely this journey would not have been possible without the amazing help and support i encountered throughout my journey.

thanks to all my “sponsors”! sponsors?! surely i dont mean any multinational corporation or bike-gear donor – but ALL THE PEOPLE who supported me in so many ways.  it was THEM who carried me. through their gifts and open hearts. unlike the conventional sponsors, they didn’t ask me to promote their company or send  spectacular pictures. nor did they expect me to write a book and become famous (although some still hope for it ; ). mostly they just smiled and whished me good luck. without them – i could never have traveled the world like this. the list is endless. maybe it was you?

..maybe it was a piece of your bread? a sip of your tea? the warmth of your fire or the shelter of your little home – that was exactly what i needed in that moment we met?  maybe you offered me a warm shower, a place for my hammok, a traditional family dinner, medicine, a 20 dollar bill, a tent, a pump, tools, oil, a chain for my bicycle?  some shade to rest. drinkingwater from your well. maybe you helped me fixing up a bicycle, calling my bank or my embassy when my passport was lost. mabe you assisted me with directions or a short ride on your truck to the next town? or maybe you took me along on your sailboat, shared your skills, your stories, a bath in your hot-tub, offered me your friendship, your wisdom and inspiration. maybe you cheered me up with a smile. a brief hello from the side of the road. a good conversation. the music from your instrument. maybe you invited me for a walk through your town or your backyard garden, or showed me the projects you were working on. maybe you let me use your password at the university library, taught me to build a house from clai, maybe you gave me a job to earn money. and maybe you let me love you for a day.

… i thank you from my heart.  you are part of my adventure. my story. my memories.

thanks to my friends and family. for your love and support and ecouragements from back home. for letting me go and for letting me come back.

thanks to marlberry, miss-scavenger and lola – the bicycles who did most of the work and who taught me a lot.

back home..and what now?

I AM really back! last weeks have been sweet and fun and a bit stressful. feels like awakening from a dream..which is fading as my body remembers places and movements and suddenly starts acting similairly like 4 years ago. its strange. when i ride my bike through warm summernights..consciously i hardly remember routes..but my body does.. and lola, my bike which has been carrying me since australia (and doesn’t even know this city ; ) magically finds her way through the concreet on the little shortcuts i used to know long time ago.

arriving was a great party. espacially the nude ride! meeting ALL the people i know is exciting and exhausting. and i am still not “done”

after the first hello i went to croatia with my friend, to help her with a climbing course for 10 days. it was cool and fun and a good break from all the welcome.

(to stay in shape ; ) i also started looking for small and easy bikerelated jobs, like riding tourists in rikschas through the city and delivering organic-vegetarian/vegan lunch by cargo-bike ; )

..i am still quite nomadic..staying one day in my mums place, one at my dads..and also with friends..

i miss being on the road a bit. and i am excited to be sharing campfires with my dear old friends again.

i still have the dream of finding a place to settle outside the city together as a collective of radical people. all those years i was secretly hoping, the people which i loved imagining to live with before taking off, would still be there, wanting to do this project, when i was finally done with my explorations of the world. but of course i couldn’t count on it.
guess what! yes things have changed of course – many projects have been put into actions, new relationships have developed and broken apart, friends have been living together in a house without private rooms but “use-oriented-room devision” and experimenting with “solidarity-economy”, some of my best friends have babies! – still the dream of finally moving together to live and  grow food together as a collective family, exists and the motivation to build this dream together seems amazingly fertile at the moment.

..also i have been in the news. first in “Kronen Zeitung” (a very populair massmedia) who made me “viennese of the week” –  fortunately the article was so short, that they couldn’t write much wrong.

krone_artikel

soon there will be another article in “online standard” in the bicycle-blog – for which i have hopes to be more valuable and inspiring to other people.

this weekend i am invited to tell my story at the partycipation festival – to inspire as “living book”

so times are still exciting. another step in the journey of life has started. i surely miss the freedom of the road. and i hope i will not miss the wisdom of living simply. and the memory of the warmhearted people  all over the world.

home sweet home! i am back in vienna!

last days have been crazy. full of tears and laughter and of hugs and cheering and of being happy together. here some pics of the the beautiful celebrations, which were welcoming me in my hometown.
